Question 6

Question 7.

7. looking back to your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

since our continuity task we have found that the work was a lot better as with in our continuity task it didn't really pan out as a good piece of work considering the amount of film shots we did they didn't really have any change. which shows how much we have developed in our skills with cameras and the technical things such as the editing and sound tracks is a lot better than our first piece.

Question 5.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

we attempted to attract our audience by forming the characters and molding their impression into one that appeals to all. for example we made the main lead (man) wear a suit and carry a bag and camera bag so he looked smart and then made his character seem suspicious and smart. we also did the same with the woman but made her seem more down to earth smart as if she's coming home but from work with a simple black out fit with some colour's. the location we filmed at made the film seem a lot more high class and modern. this brought a very different feel to the film as did the outfits and it proved that the mise-en-scene did matter. we also used camera effects to try and make the shots stand out to a wider more now-a-day audience as we tried to make it seem more dynamic and snappy, more modern.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our opening sequence was acceptable to be classed as a 12a as it includes footage similar to the expectations of the BBFC official website.

12A – Suitable for 12 years and over. No-one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult. No-one younger than 12 may rent or buy a ‘12’ rated video or DVD. Responsibility for allowing under-12s to view lies with the accompanying or supervising adult.

Theme

The theme of our piece is thriller government spy themed. We believe that the theme is not suitable for younger children, mainly because we don't believe they'll will understand/grasp what's going on.

Language

The use of strong language (eg 'fuck') must be infrequent and as we hardly have the characters swear, we are still in the guidelines for this and racist abuse is also of particular concern but we dont have any references to this so we are good for this.

Violence

The bbfc say that, "Violence must not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood." As we only have one scene with violence in and that does not have any blood in sight and the injures are not horrific, we are ok for this to be a 12a. They also say,

Horror

Sustained moderate threat and menace are permitted. Occasional gory moments only. Our film doesnt have any gory moments to it and as moderate threats and menace are allowed, we fit into this as we have harmless threats in one scene.

As our film has reference to drugs, It fits in with the gidelines of a 12a as the bbfc say,

"Any misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised or instructional." and as we do not show much of them and do not make them sound good, we are ok in this area.

Question 3.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

our logo was first designed for our first theme of social realism drama. once we had decided to change our theme and had come up with some more film ideas we had not got enough time to re-do our logo so we stayed with the logo we had. our idea for this at the time was as it was quite comical and simple it was rather well fitted for the social realism but as we looked into the work of our logo it had few faults such as the word font was a little difficult to read although we knew we had this issue there was not enough time for us to finish the idea. also the design of our logo had that as it brought a certain unique theme to the work. a distributor for our film would most likely be a indie film industry as its not really got the big movie ideal to it.

Question 2.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

with our first idea it was more likely to represent the younger teenage age scene but now with our final piece that had dramatically changed through all of the themes we decided would fit more of a adult age group. as for social groups we found that there wasnt a very specific range that would watch the film as we thought our project suited all. there is however a gender stereotype with the main characters through out the project. for instance the main man seems suspicious at first when he actually is not suspicious atall it is really the woman who is the culprit if anything. i found that our final project fitted the genre and reached our target audience aswell as we had expected.

Question 1.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product uses the forms and conventions of the real media through using the different styled shots. which try and bring out more to be looking at. a few scenes that we decided to use with this technique was the shots of the woman's legs as this is a different style to the other points in the film as we felt it added more dynamic styles towards the project. for our final project we found that it did not inspire us to do a certain technique with just one idea or one film opening, but we were influenced by many different ideas from many different films. as ours was of the thriller genre we found that it used many styles used in many different thriller films, and or television series.

Titles

When we made the titles the first time round, we saved them buy the names of the credits and as it saves them in alphabetical order, they got muddled up. WE put them into our footage and realised when we watched it. We had to take them out off our footage and put them back into the correct order. After we had done this, we put them back into our film and it looked really good. An example off our credits is below:

Labels:

Piecing together

When we were putting our footage together, we found that it was really easy to do as at first, we didnt know what to expect once we had uploaded it. We deleted a few pieces of footage as they didnt fit in with the rest of the film.

For the soundtrack, it changed every time we changed our storyline. our end piece went well with our footage as it changed with a different character. For the male, it was more jumpy, whereas it was smoother for the female. It took awhile to make the soundtrack as we had to make sure it was in time with our footage so we kept looking at the film to see the times of which character came and left. This worked really well as once we had uploaded this to the film, it kept in time with the footage and added to the effects.

Labels:

New Idea

After we had finished our rough cut, we all had changed how we felt about our storyline and as our footage was not great, we all decided on a new storyline and made a time to film when we were all free to do it.

This time, we had all our actors so we could film and managed to get all our footage quicker than we had expected. We were in a new setting and we had kept the idea of it being in a flat but this time we were down the end of long road instead of going all the way to Royston.

Labels:

Dramatic change

We had a problem with filming our footage as one of our actors didnt show up to the filming session. This meant we didnt have a male actor for the main role and, as we couldnt find another male who could film in such short notice, we had to change the storyline. We had gone to Royston to film as one of the groups friends had a flat we could borrow.

We quickly brainstormed up a new storyline and started filming a variety of shots including long shots and close ups. We had got enough footage to last a good amount of time and then uploaded to the college computers. We edited it so it all was in the right place and made sense. We added footage we already had to it as we had made our new plot as it fit well which also lengthened it out to a sutable time as once we had edited the first bit of footage, it had decreased so once we had added the old footage, it went back to a suitable length.

Filming

When we were filming, we managed to get enough footage to last for about two minutes in which we could edit it all together and still have enough footage for it to last for an acceptable amount of time. We found places in Royston similar to what we had on our storyboard but changed our storyline in places, therefore, not being able to get all our footage in one day. We got together and decided to finish filming one night in the week to add to our thriller genre change.

We started to edit the footage we had already in our first lesson back from half term. This gave us an idea of what we had to film next and we created another storyboard to fit with our ideas.

Title Styles

We have been considering a back up option for our titles as the more we are starting to figure our sequence out the more difficult it is seeming for our titles to be within the shoots unless we can get it perfectly aligned. We have been considering using one font idea through out the film like within our last opening but we will still try to input the ones we want but it was seen as a good idea.

A post will soon be put up to show the back up fonts.

Target Audience

For our film opening we have aimed our target audience to be the range of teenager till young adult and maybe reach the adult audience as well.
We have found that this a good audience as most films with our film are usually watched within the same range . We have also decided that this will be easier for us to film as our idea is simple enough for our group as we all have very strict timings as most work or have other interferences.

to finalize our theme is, social realist drama.

Filming Locations

We decided to film our opening scene in Royston as it was the closest location we all could get to which had all the places we needed such as a bakers, high streets etc. For the rave scene, we have decided to film a real party and use the footage to put into the opening sequence. This way we will have a sense of reality in our sequence rather than an unbelievable opening.

Filming Our Opening scene attempt 1.

We originally decided to film on Friday 6th and over the weekend. However, due to the adverse weather conditions college got closed at lunch and all bar 1 of our group was not able to get to college because of the snow.
As a result we were not able to film over the weekend we had to re-arrange a different time to film our opening. We have now decided that we shall film within our half term and hopefully get all our filming done within this time.

Animatic

We have now finalised our animatic and as you will be able to see as soon as we upload the final cut then you will notice the drawing were not as i had expected as well we didn't draw them as we would of liked but it has turned out to look how we are planning our opening to look like as it sticks to the general idea and theme. we are very happy with our animatic as it gives the right impression of our film and is designed in the way we needed. the only issues we had with our animatic was the music design as we didnt have a clue of what kind of music to use for our piece. We have now choosen to use a mix of musical themes for example a cross between club and R&B but we have still not finalised on the music that we are to use for our piece.

Music/Soundtrack

We have had a few ideas for the music theme and we are thinking along the lines;
a band named 'Example' and their song 'We came, we saw, we killed the crowd' this song we found was very fitting to the theme and stood out from all our other tunes.
This is a link to the site their music is on:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=53073902
Although we would like to use this music and soundtrack we are still not sure whether we can use this as our overall music. In the end, we were not allowed to use this soundtrack so we created one of our own in garageband.

Story Boards

Our storyboards we have now finished creating. We have settled with the ideas that we will begin our story board with a shot of a group of people as in a gang of mates and one goes off and we follow his trip to a random place his whole journey is him leading us into places that are very common and run down. Through out the journey the lad/girl is listening to music not a song as such just a beat to a song throughout so the sound will be the diagetic and so seen on the i-pod.
Our storyboard contains images of simple things such as;
- Windows [shop windows, house windows]
- A Rave [Rave]
- Spilt drinks
- News stands
- Grave yard
All very random scene's and through out the scenes the boy/girl walks past the scene and it carry's on like this throughout the opening.

Friday 23 January 2009

Our group has had some initial ideas and we put forward our best features to create our social realist opening sequence. The ideas that we put together create the plot to the opening of the film:

The main character is a teenage female who does not get on with her family. She ends up getting kicked out onto the streets and starts to hang out with the wrong crowd who get her into drugs and alcohol. Quickly, she runs out of money and one of her friends introduces her into prostitution to get some money in time to pay off her debts to the drug dealers.

Another idea that we had was a different story line in the genre of social realist drama:

The film opens with the shot of a camera following a man or woman on their way through a counsel estate. On his journey he comes across many different senarios. TBC....

mood board

Mood Board

For our mood board, we looked up different pictures on the internet to do with certain themes for our British socialist drama opening sequence. Beforehand, we made a spider diagram of all the themes that could be shown in our opening sequence and we came up with;
Raves,
Graffiti,
Violence,
Chavs, Yobs and Gangsters,
Smoking, Drinking and Drugs.
We then went on the internet and found quite a few pictures and put them all into a powerpoint, each slide about a different theme.

LOGO!!!! :D:D:D:D:D

In our first lesson on our new topic we have been studying and creating new logos for our group. we have come up with our band name as Asbo Productions, thanks to Nathans intuitive thinking. For our final design for our logo we have decided on a simple fade in and out wording which contains the name of our brand which is in the font style of Edwardian script ITC which is a rather posh font which kind of spreads an ironic structure to the logo. it also has a small blue crown which is situated on top of the A in Asbo and at the end of the logo it tilts. Also at the very beginning it has a blue trolley which is moving across the screen. We have found that we are very happy with our logo so far and if we could do any improvement it would have to firstly be a changed theme as we find that this logo fits in perfectly with our theme for our opening sequence which is social realist drama.

P1-02 FILM OPENING

Forest Gump opening scene.

In the opening sequence to the film Forest Gump it has started off with feather and the camera is slowly moving around to follow the feathers journey which happens to end up at the foot of Tom Hanks. this could be seen as a representation of the movie itself as the feather could be a symbolic representation of Forest Gumps life, with the twists and turns the feather is seen doing it represents the ups and downs within Forest Gumps life. the style of the film and the beginning being quite simple and fits in within the genre of the film is one of the main reasons we choose this opening sequence.
Camera work- the camera seems to follow the feather as it floats down towards the road and then to Forest Gump. this is most likely achieved with a crane.
Editing- The feather is most likely some kind of effect. editing is used to represent the transition between the feather and Forest Gump.
Sound- Only Diagetic sound can be heard at the beginning of the clip and then non-diagetic sound is introduced in the form of a light piano piece.
Mise-en-scene- the whole scene seems to be light set in a town quiet very green a typical American town, with the usual church tower and bus station with white buildings and wide roads.
Titles- The titles are viewed in a white colour in the style of a newspaper with quite a thick font and it is situated in the centre of the screen in a very traditional style. They fade in and out of the screen within time of the music.
